Tourism prospectus looks brighter even after recent introduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on tourism services, with an increased revenue and tourist arrivals, according to a new report.
The report by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism shows that revenue from the sector increased by 17 per cent between June and August, this year, marking a positive trend that counters the recent notion from stakeholders, including legislators that VAT in tourism services would negatively affect the sector.
According to the report, earnings from the sector rose to 67.87bn/- between June and August, this year, up from 57.96bn/- collected during the same period last year. |

The government decided that beginning this financial year, collection of property tax collection will be undertaken by TRA instead of the Local Government Authorities.
This is according to a briefing given to Mwanza Regional Commissioner (RC) John Mongela who made a familiarisation tour at the TRA regional office on Wednesday. Mongela said TRA start collecting property tax as per government directives.
“We are all aware of the government push in ensuring internal revenue is collected, including property tax previously collected by the municipal and town councils,” he said. He said his office will immediately communicate with TRA headquarters on the delay as there is no official statement. |

News which broke out on Friday in the National Assembly that the much-anticipated construction of the central railway line to standard gauge may remain an elusive dream is indeed disappointing.
Listening attentively to the carefully chosen words by Minister for Finance and Planning Dr Phillip Mpango in Dodoma when winding up debate on the nation’s development framework, it came out quite clear that the project to have the railway uplifted to the international standard gauge is impossible to be implemented by Tanzania alone as it is very costly. |
