5. Tourism Industry Booms Despite New Tax

Tourism prospectus looks brighter even after recent introduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on tourism services, with an increased revenue and tourist arrivals, according to a new report.

The report by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism shows that revenue from the sector increased by 17 per cent between June and August, this year, marking a positive trend that counters the recent notion from stakeholders, including legislators that VAT in tourism services would negatively affect the sector.

According to the report, earnings from the sector rose to 67.87bn/- between June and August, this year, up from 57.96bn/- collected during the same period last year.

The nation's economy is on track to reach 7.2 per cent as projected for 2016 due to impressive growth in key economic sectors, compared to 7 per cent in 2015, the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has said.

Central Bank Governor, Professor Benno Ndulu, said different economic indicators “are showing that the country's economy will grow in 2016.’’ The indicators include generation of electricity, which has increased, thus helping to boost economic growth.

Akizungumza jana Mjini Vwawa, Galawa alisema halmashauri zikiwa na miradi ya biashara zitakusanya fedha za kutosha na kuachana na ukusanyaji wa ushuru wa mazao ambao wananchi wamekuwa wakiulalamikia.

Alisema ubunifu wa biashara hizo utafungua fursa kwa vijana wasio na ajira na kuajiriwa kupitia miradi hiyo, kufunguliwa kwa viwanda ambavyo vikisimamiwa na kufanyakazi kwa uhakika vitakuwa ni chanzo cha mapato.

 
10. Long Awaited Information Bill Sails Through.

NATIONAL Assembly yesterday passed the long-awaited access to information bill, 2016, with the government describing it as a fresh law to improve accountability and transparency in the country.

The bill which had been during debates criticised by opposition MPs, is grounded on helping citizens to access information from public institutions and neither had intention to gang press freedom.

 
11. Lack of Guidelines Delays Property Tax Collection

  The government decided that beginning this financial year, collection of property tax collection will be undertaken by TRA instead of the Local Government Authorities.

This is according to a briefing given to Mwanza Regional Commissioner (RC) John Mongela who made a familiarisation tour at the TRA regional office on Wednesday. Mongela said TRA start collecting property tax as per government directives.

“We are all aware of the government push in ensuring internal revenue is collected, including property tax previously collected by the municipal and town councils,” he said. He said his office will immediately communicate with TRA headquarters on the delay as there is no official statement.

 
12. Standard gauge railway: Great Lakes regional govts must come together

  News which broke out on Friday in the National Assembly that the much-anticipated construction of the central railway line to standard gauge may remain an elusive dream is indeed disappointing.

Listening attentively to the carefully chosen words by Minister for Finance and Planning Dr Phillip Mpango in Dodoma when winding up debate on the nation’s development framework, it came out quite clear that the project to have the railway uplifted to the international standard gauge is impossible to be implemented by Tanzania alone as it is very costly.
 
13. Premier Majaliwa to officiate NEEC stakeholders meeting

  Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa is expected to officiate the opening of the National Economic Empowerment Council (NEEC) stakeholders meeting today in Dar es Salaam.

Announcing the meeting to journalists, the Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Hamis Mwinyimvua said the meeting is part of the implementation of the National Economic Empowerment Policy and is organised by NEEC and the Prime Minister’s office.
 
14. Govt releases 318bn/- to cover development projects

  The government has released 318bn/- for the month of January purposely to cover various development projects in the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Dar es Salaam at the weekend, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Planning Servaciaus Likwelile said out of those funds 274bn/- have been set for construction of roads, 40bn/- for Kinyerezi II power project and 7.7bn/- has been set aside for water projects.
 
15. Govt urged to review Production Sharing Agreements (PSA) for exploration firms

  The government has been urged to review the current Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) system so as to make exploration and activity within the companies to become more flexible and move its focus from exploration towards encouraging development and production.
