136. Small Business Entrepreneurship in Dar es Salaam: Problems and Prospects

  This is a paper presented during the African Development and Poverty Reduction: The Macro- Micro Linkage forum between 13th – 15th October 2004. The purpose of the paper is to present empirical evidence of the prevalence and impact of crime on entrepreneurship; give an inductive discussion on the magnitude, forms of crime and how it impacts on small business in Tanzania; and lastly the paper highlights some Policy implications of the crime situation and how the macro-micro linkage as a strategy for poverty reduction can be forged.

  A vibrant and dynamic Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector would help Tanzania withstand the challenges of globalization, the Director of Planning and Policy in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Januarius Mrema has said.

Stakeholders of SMEs can venture the international trade markets through continued production of high quality products that meet the international standards, he said.

  Attracting investment in the manufacturing sector can lead to industrialization through diversifying the economy and reducing dependence on traditional export crops like cashew nuts, coffee and tea. Investments could be enhanced in agro-processing industries like fish, fruits and vegetables. Processing of minerals would add more value than exporting them raw.

In the United States, that’s a pretty common routine. As the world’s largest importer of coffee, we wind up drinking a lot of coffee from many areas of the world.

Even as the United States imports more coffee, we are aware that many coffee producing countries are suffering from the lowest world prices for coffee in recent memory.

145. Report on the Assessment of Feasibility of a Women Business Incubator

This report presents findings based on surveys carried out on a feasibility study on using business incubators as an alternative means of facilitating the establishment and growth of women owned enterprises.

MCDGC commissioned Dr. M. Chijoriga of the Faculty of Commerce and Management to carry out this study.
 
146. Dar TCCIA moves to solve SME woes

  The Dar es Salaam Regional Branch of Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA) has initiated a dialogue with the government and city municipalities aimed at tackling problems affecting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The Dar es Salaam TCCIA chairman, Tamim Amijee, said in the city on Wednesday that the association has organized a one-day workshop for its members to address a number of snags affecting business sector.
 
147. Microfinance policy should be properly implemented

  The Microfinance policy was formulated in 2000 to ensure that there are a large number of institutions providing credit to small and medium scale enterprises.

The co-ordinator of the policy is the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), which licences commercial banks, and financial institutions and in the near future Saccos will also operate under BoT regulations as quasi–financial institutions.

Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO) says it has the capacity to support small-scale mushroom farmers to boost productivity and their incomes.
