271. Women and Gender Participation in the Fisheries Sector in Lake Victoria

  The paper starts with an analysis of the gender roles of women in the fisheries sector. These roles are recognized in three stages of production: fishing, processing and marketing. Further, the paper looks at the impacts of gender roles in promoting or hindering the involvement of women in fisheries research, development, and management. Lastly, the paper develops recommendations that will ensure the effective participation of women in the management of Lake Victoria fisheries resources.

  Livestock prices are generally rising due to two factors. First, livestock conditions are currently better, having improved from stress caused by water and browse shortages last year. Second, livestock supplies in markets have declined because livestock keepers (many of whom have started cultivating at least a little land in recent years) are currently depend on cereals from their own harvests rather than the market; and at the same time, lower cereal prices mean that those still depending on markets can survive a lot longer on the sale of one bull....

  The vuli rains have performed poorly in several northern locations, raising concerns about poor crop performance and a prolonged period of food shortages without outside help. Drought relief interventions have remained inadequate. The government has only released 52 percent of the maize planned for subsidized sale to food insecure households. Tanzania has received donor contributions for only 60 percent of the food aid needed for food for farming activities and only 30 percent of seed aid requirements. No fertilizer aid has been received. Wholesale maize prices in urban markets have either stabilized at higher levels or kept on increasing in other markets. The food security outlook is not promising because plans to mitigate the effects of drought are not yet fully implemented, a problem compounded by the failure of the vuli rains....

Baadhi ya wakulima wa zao la pamba katika wilaya ya Bunda mkoani Mara, wamelalamikia vitendo vya udanganyifu wa vipimo unavyofanywa na mawakala wa kampuni binafsi za ununuzi wa zao hilo.

Wakizungumza na gazeti hili katika baadhi ya vituo vya ununuzi wa pamba, wakulima hao walisema imekuwa kawaida kwa mawakala kuwaibia pamba kwa kutumia mizani mbovu.
