  Ten financial institutions, which have been entrusted by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) with the provision of credit to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have started to announce their plans. The SME Credit Guarantee Scheme has been established by the government with a deliberate aim to provide loans to entrepreneurs.
The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) supervises the scheme.

  A local company, The Good Opportrunity Development & Co.Ltd (GODCL) ,has established regional loan fund projects that will address the development, financial, business start up and expansion needs of the majority of the residents at East African regional leve.
The firms Chief Executive Officer, Aloyce Maganga Midelo, has said that the fund stemmed from the policy of the government which is for the genuine economic empowerment of the Tanzanians through the ownership and control of the economy for addressing poverty at the household level.

  Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), for many years in lenders black books, are now banks babies. The sudden change of heart by banks in favour of SMEs comes in the wake of an affirmative action by the government to implement its four years old national SME and poverty reduction policy by putting in place an SME credit guarantee scheme (SME-CGS).
A total of Tshs.2 billion was set aside during 2004-5 government budget as a guarantee purse supporting the scheme.
