The Minister of State in President’s Office (Public Service and Good Governance), Ms Angella Kairuki, said this in the National Assembly yesterday in her answer to basic question by Singida Urban MP, Mr Mussa Sima (CCM).

She noted further that the government had dished out a total of 56.293bn/- to 55,688 workers during the financial year 2014/2015, being arrears arising from promotion and new employees, among others.

 
67. Student Loans Deemed Inadequate.

The government is contemplating changing the way high education students pay back the loan as well as reviewing the amount given for meals and accommodation to satisfy growing demand.


Ministry for Education, Science and Technology had been conducting evaluation of the actual amount needed to be paid to higher learning students for meals and accommodation but the ‘biting’ price of foods calls for another assessment.

Deputy Minister Engineer Stella Manyanya said here yesterday the ministry will review the scales used to assess whether the amount offered by the government was indeed enough or should be changed.

 
68. Investors Invited to Mafia Gas Block.

The government said yesterday Mafia offshore oil and gas block is open for further exploration and development to any investor.


The 380km square area is now vacant after the expiry of the licences held by two long-operating investors British Petroleum (BP) and Maurel ET Prome.

According to information issued by Deputy Minister for Energy and Minerals Dr Medard Kalemani in the National Assembly here yesterday the latest exploration by the two firms revealed that the area had potentials for oil and gas development.

Stanbic Bank has launched a new centre which offers full range of banking services to SME’s to provide more convenient services to entrepreneurs.


The new centre dubbed Enterprise Direct,comes up with a wide range of value added features which will make it easier for clients, especially the medium sized enterprises or SME’s to make deposits wherever they are.

“The focus is on migrating clients to digital self-service channels to make it easier for the customers to transact,” Stanbic Bank’s Head of Enterprise Banking, Christopher Gilbert Mlay, said in a statement.

 
70. Businesswomen to Follow Up on Tenders.

Tanzania Women Chamber of Commerce (TWCC) plans to make a follow up on implementation of a directive by Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan to councils to give 30 per cent of their tenders to business women and youth.

When launching Women Empowerment Forum in Dar es Salaam in June, this year, Ms Samia made an emphasis on the 30 per cent share for women and youth as stipulated in the new Public Procurement (Amendment) Act, 2016. “We will do evaluation to see whether the councils are executing this. It’s our hope that this law would economically empower women, “chairperson of the TWCC, Ms Jackline Maleko, said.

 
71. Tourism Industry Booms Despite New Tax

Tourism prospectus looks brighter even after recent introduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on tourism services, with an increased revenue and tourist arrivals, according to a new report.

The report by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism shows that revenue from the sector increased by 17 per cent between June and August, this year, marking a positive trend that counters the recent notion from stakeholders, including legislators that VAT in tourism services would negatively affect the sector.

According to the report, earnings from the sector rose to 67.87bn/- between June and August, this year, up from 57.96bn/- collected during the same period last year.

 
72. Nation' s Economy Right on 7.2 Percent Target.

The nation's economy is on track to reach 7.2 per cent as projected for 2016 due to impressive growth in key economic sectors, compared to 7 per cent in 2015, the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has said.

Central Bank Governor, Professor Benno Ndulu, said different economic indicators “are showing that the country's economy will grow in 2016.’’ The indicators include generation of electricity, which has increased, thus helping to boost economic growth.

 
73. Tabora Honey Fits for Human Consumption.

The traditionally produced honey in Tabora region is safe for human consumption, the Minister for Industries, Trade and Investment, Mr Charles Mwijage, told the National Assembly yesterday.

He assured the general public and traders that the product meets quality standards, currently stipulated by Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).

Responding to questions posed by Tabora Urban MP Emmanuel Mwakasaka (CCM) here yesterday, the minister said the government was working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Tanzania Trade Authority (TanTrade) to analyse market opportunities.
