  About 85 percent of the country's population-mostly poor-lives in rural areas, with 20 percent living in extreme poverty. Smallholder farmers are potentially the largest drivers of economic growth in Tanzania because they account for over 50 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product. However, because they depend exclusively on rain-fed agriculture, their production is usually affected by bad weather, inadequate road infrastructure, etc.

  A network of more than 3,200 rural agro-dealers will be established in Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi to help small-scale farmers rid themselves of poverty and hunger. In Tanzania, it will be implemented under the Tanzania Agro-dealer Strengthening Programme (TASP) to reduce the time and distance farmers travel to fetch farm inputs.

  Mushroom cultivation was first introduced to Tanzania in 1993 by the Ministry of Agriculture
and Cooperatives under the sponsorship of the International Fund for Agricultural
Development. The focus was on cultivation of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) and the
first strains to be cultivated were obtained from Belgium. This report presents findings of a survey on status of the industry that was carried
out in 5 regions of Tanzania famous for growing mushrooms between October 2006 and March 2007. The report also presents findings of a case study of a typical mushroom farmer.

skills. The new manual advises on how to create a Junior Farmer Field and Life School to educate children on how to create sustainable livelihoods and long-term food security.

90. TZ to benefit from GEF-assisted fisheries project

  Tanzania is among seven countries in the southwest Indian Ocean region that could reduce poverty through sustainable development of marine resources under a new project financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the World Bank has said. A US $12m grant from the GEF will help these countries to manage their fisheries resources for maximum economic returns, the Bank said following approval of the project by its Board of Executive Directors.
