  The determinants of the size distribution of enterprises in manufacturing, and the role of
small-medium enterprises in economic development, constitute an important area of
interest but lacks detailed empirical work. This paper attempts to compare the size
distribution of employment and value added in manufacturing for a number of Asian countries, and provide some tentative conclusions about the factors affecting the differences in the patterns of distribution.
 
77. Tanzanian Women Entrepreneurs in Spearheading Development in the Food Industry

  The Integrated Training Programme for Women Entrepreneurs in the Food Processing Industry was designed by SIDO and UNIDO. The programme’s main objective is to promote women’s entrepreneurship development in the food processing subsector through the improvement of existing micro enterprises managed by women, and the encouragement of new ventures with a potential to grow into SMEs. It addresses major constraints that affect enterprise operation and growth, through skill development and integrated technical, business and managerial assistance in food processing.

  The Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) made a strategic decision of taking a more pro-active role in contributing to SME development, as a way of furthering its mission of improving labour relations in the private sector. In 2004/05, the Association conducted a study of the influence of policies, laws and regulations on SMEs, with particular emphasis on effects on access to market, an issue known to influence quantity and quality of jobs in SMEs. The study established that the public procurement and standards regulatory regimes are among the main issues hampering access to markets for SMEs.

  A delegation of 50 small and medium scale entrepreneurs (SMEs) from Tanzania has departed for China to study new and modern business and trade techniques and skills to boost up their operations. The Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Rita Mlaki, handed over air tickets to the SMEs, who are also members of the Barclays Bank-Tanzania Business Club, in a short ceremony held in Dar es Salaam last week.

  The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) Director, during a seminar on Standaridisation, processing and packaging of local products, asked SMEs to secure quality certificates to attract local and international markets for their products. The Government, in corporation with TBS has launched a project aimed to educate and help SMEs produce products that were accepted nationally and internationally.
