  A new World Bank report says that Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have all shown significant progress in the key aspects of improving governance over the past 10 years. Tanzania has the best record in its efforts to control corruption and also scores best under the "Rule of Law" category. Tanzania scored well under the "Voice and Accountability" section and government effectiveness.

  In the process of implementing the 1992 National Population Policy for a periodof 10 years, some successes were registered and, in some areas, constraints were encountered. New developments that have been taking place nationally and internationally have necessitated the revision of the 1992 National Population Policy. The implementation of the new 2006 National Population Policy will be done intandem with the 2003 Zanzibar Population Policy.

  The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) is to engage a consultant to conduct the National Government and Corruption Survey (NGACS). The survey is part of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Action Plan (NACSAP II) 2006-2010 and is intended to develop empirical information that will be discussed, analysed and used to help the government, civil society and the private sector to formulate policies and programmes to strengthen good governance.

  Former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has said the media plays a significant role in checking government conduct and enhances democracy and the rule of law in both public and private sectors.

The remarks were made in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday at the launch of Changamoto newspaper, adding that Tanzanians also had to build a culture of learning through the media.

The Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the OECD set up a special task force to look at how aid can be delivered more effectively through simplifying and harmonising donor procedures.

105. Measuring success in Anti-Corruption Commissions - case of Tanzania

  The findings of this report are based on the insights gained from country visits to Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia in 2004. The study found a lack of synchronicity and compatibility between the needs, aims, motivations, capacities and expectations of governments, donors and ACCs, leading to a lack of coordination, complementarity and confidence between the three parties, which, in turn, is connected to their differing 'lifecycles'.
