106. Vice President stresses need for development research

  Vice President Ali Mohamed Shein has challenged public and private development institutions to invest in and enhance research for new and appropriate technologies. New technologies developed locally are ideal for producing new and diversified products capable of competing in the global market and bringing about industrial revolution. He said this when he graced the annual business dinner and the President's Manufacturer of the Year Awards (PMYA) ceremony.
 
107. 2007 Global Development Awards and Medals Competition

  GDN is accepting submissions for the 2007 Global Development Awards and Medals Competition. The largest international competition on development research, this year nearly $240,000 in cash and travel expenses is up for grabs! Submissions are accepted for research proposals, completed research papers and proposals for expansion of development projects. The three categories are:
Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development; Medals for Research on Development and Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project. Deadline: August 20, 2007 for development projects; September 17, 2007 for research awards and medals.
 
108. Disseminate research outcomes to apt end users

  Vice President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein has called upon researchers and other stakeholders to ensure that research outcomes are appropriately disseminated to the people and other end users. He said disseminating of research outcomes should aim at equipping people with the needed knowledge and technology to fight poverty and other development oriented problems.
 
109. Dar Lauds World Bank for Support

  Dar es Salaam has lauded the World Bank's approval of $232 million of credit to the country to support the government's strategy for economic growth and poverty reduction popularly known as MKUKUTA. The World Bank Country Director for Tanzania and Uganda Ms Judy O'Connor said Tanzania was vulnerable to external shocks such as droughts, changes in commodity prices, or fluctuation in aid flows and that the credit encourages the diversification of the economy and institutional reforms that will reduce this vulnerability.

111. World Bank funds stall water supply projects

  The implementation of water projects in districts countrywide has been stalled by a delay in disbursing funds from the World Bank. The Minister for Water, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, made the statement when responding to an additional question by Ephraim Madeje (CCM - Dodoma), who wanted to know when the government would implement water projects in villages that were experiencing severe scarcity including Ngh'ongh'ona Village in his constituency.

113. MKURABITA, MKUKUTA how familiar are they to the people?

  Of all the interviewees covering people of all walks of life except children none could tell what MKURABITA or MKUKUTA is all about and for what purpose has it been established. Some simply said they had heard of it but don't know what the two terms are. What is even surprising is that some of the petty businessmen who were caught operating beside MKURABITA and MKUKUTA offices did not know what the offices are there for.

understanding is needed of how the informal systems through which half or more of the residential land in African cities is delivered operate, are evolving and interact with formal land administration systems. This study analysed the characteristics of informal land
delivery systems in six African cities. The aims were to assess the strengths and weaknesses of alternative land delivery mechanisms, especially with respect to women and the poor.

  Cotu secretary-general Francis Atwoli yesterday told Tanzanians not to be afraid of the East African economic integration, saying they would benefit rather than lose.

Speaking at the start of the regional workshop on labour migration within the region, Mr Atwoli said fears that the economically-powerful Kenya would swallow Tanzanian was just a myth.
 
116. Tanzania commits USD 952m to national water programme

  Tanzania has unveiled an ambitious programme to develop water resources and improve rural water supply and sanitation. The Minister for Water said the money — invested over a period of five years from 2006-2010 — will be provided by the government and the country's development partners.

  AFRICA's greatest challenge to development through trade remains lack of capacity both financial and human, participants attending a month-long trade and development training course in Tanzania have learnt. While African countries participate actively in trade, this has rarely translated into development for most nations due to a number of reasons. According to the Untied Nations, there are at least 53 Least Developed Countries in the world and over half of these are found on the African continent.

The two presidents expressed their commitment to resolve existing trade imbalances and critical constraints to investment, trade, infrastructural development and related challenges.
 
119. Dont rush to East Africa Federation

  The National Muslim Council (Bakwata) has cautioned the government against fast-tracking the formation of the East African political federation. It has instead advised the authorities to honour the peoples' views before endorsing or disapproving the proposal. The Deputy Mufti of the country's supreme Muslim organization, Sheikh Abubakar Zubeir, sounded the caution yesterday when he addressed the Maulid Baraza, which was held at national level in Morogoro.

  Regional leaders called the SADC meeting to discuss the political crisis in Zimbabwe which analysts say threatens to destabilise the region. President Mugabe, who has faced renewed Western-led criticism after a crackdown on opposition leaders, will brief leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at the special summit.
