	Tanzania covers an area of about 945,000 sq. km. of which the total land area is about 888,600 sq. km. According to the Hunting Technical Services (1999) survey, Tanzania is generally categorized by cover types into forest cover, woodland, bushland, grass land, open land, cultivated land and others. According to FAO (2001), Tanzania loses approximately 92,000 ha or 0.2percent of its forest land through deforestation.

	Ten million more US dollars have been granted to finance the conservation project of Mount Kilimanjaro and its surrounding ecosystem, according to reports reaching here on Saturday. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) launched this week the second phase of the Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation Project in Moshi of northern Tanzania. The conservation project, known as COMPACT, runs from 2005 to 2009 and gets the 10-million-dollar grant from the United Nations Foundation and Global Environment Facility.

Its authors say a focus on aid has taken attention away from more complex issues such as the environment. The report is endorsed by the UN, and comes two weeks before a major summit to review progress on the Goals.

	Dar es Salaam - Tanzania got a World Bank loan on Thursday to help it conserve and protect stocks of fish, a vital food source for millions living by the sea. The bank signed a $51-million concessional loan and $10-million in a grant for a six-year programme to manage the marine and coastal environment. Even if you forget the growth that populations will have within the next 20 years, already today you see the stresses of existing populations, said Judy OConnor, World Bank director for Tanzania and Uganda.

	The World Bank has approved the Marine and Coastal Environmental Management project for the Tanzania. The overall project cost is US$61 million, including a US$51 million from IDA) and a US$10 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project will target all coastal districts on mainland Tanzania as well as Unguja and Pemba islands in Zanzibar and the 200,000 km2 Exclusive Economic Zone.

	The latest report of 10 leading academies of sciences in the world on climate change has warned that there is now strong evidence that significant global warming is occurring and will affect economic development of Africa. According to the report the evidence on global warming comes from direct measurements of rising surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures and from phenomena such as increase in average global sea levels, retreating glaciers, and changes to many physical and biological systems.

	While East African countries are contemplating imposing a ban on the use of polythene bags, the good news for manufacturers and importers of the product is that a recycling plant will start operations in April in Tanzania. The Minister of State in the Vice President's Office responsible for Environment, Arcado Ntagazwa, said that the government plans to impose a ban on polythene bags before October because they are a menace to the environment.
