EAC MEDIA SEMINAR SET FOR JAN 15 2007 IN DAR

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 12th January 2007: The East African Community Secretariat has organized one-day seminar for Media Executives, Owners, Senior Journalists and Practitioners based in Dar es Salaam, to take place on Monday 15 January 2007 at the Protea Hotel Courtyard, Dar es Salaam. The Hon. Minister of the East African Cooperation of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Msabaha, is expected to be the Guest of Honor.

The Seminar aims at updating Media Executives, Owners, Senior Journalists and Practitioners in the United Republic of Tanzania on the latest developments in the East African regional integration process; and specifically to discuss the role of the Tanzanian Media in the proposed East African Federation.

According to the seminar programme, Hon. Dr. George Francis Nangale, member/elect of the East African Legislative Assembly from the United Republic of Tanzania will present a paper on EAC at a glance, while Dr. Caleb Nyamajeje Weggoro, Principal Economist will present a paper on the current status of the EAC Projects and Programmes. A paper on East African Federation will be presented by Hon Beatrice Birungi Kiraso, EAC Deputy Secretary General (Political Federation).

Mr. Anthony Ngaiza, Secretary General, Media Council of Tanzania and Former Lecturer, Tanzania School of Journalism will present a paper on: The Role of the Tanzanian Media in the East African Federation. His paper will be discussed by Mr. Gelvas Moshiro, Deputy Director, Tanzania Information Services and Former Lecturer, Tanzania School of Journalism

Background: During the EAC regional workshop for the national consultative committees on the East African Federation held from 27th to 28th October 2006 in Arusha, participants (who included members of the National Consultative Committee from the Partner States, Ministers and Permanent Secretaries for the EAC Affairs, Consultants) specifically requested the EAC Secretariat to bring on board the Media in the Partner States as a priority and be educated on the East African Federation issues. At the same time, at different fora, the EAC Secretariat has been urged to involve members of the Press in the educating the people of East Africa on the proposed East African Federation. Accordingly, the EAC Secretariat in liaison with the Ministries of the East African Cooperation of the Partner States have scheduled a series of one-day sensitization seminars on political federation for media executives and owners in Partner States to be conducted during the months of January and February 2007 as follows:

(i) 15th Jan 2007 for the United Republic of Tanzania at the Courtyard Hotel, Dar es Salaam;

(ii) 22nd Jan 2007 for the Republic of Kenya at Silver Springs Hotel, and

(iii) 9th February for the Republic of Uganda at Hotel Africana.
