Integrated Pest Management
Since 1992 the FRG has been supporting the United Republic of Tanzania in developing and implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in agriculture. In Shinyanga region and from 1998 in Arusha and Kilimanjaro Region plant protection problems were identified and options for solutions were elaborated together with farmers and in cooperation with researchers. The IPM approach developed is now being promoted to the local government (districts). At national level the support concentrates on the enforcement of regulations to the Plant Protection Act (1997) and on strengthening the service delivery capacity of PHS in the decentralised government. Focus is given to organizational development, co-operation with agricultural research institutions and extension services, to human resources development and management.

National Coconut Development Programme
The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) is often referred to as the “Tree of Life” because of its multi-purpose uses. In Tanzania, the coconut is an important perennial cash and subsistence oil crop that supports the livelihood of many farmers in the coastal areas, providing food shelter, and employment opportunity. The coconut palm, as an important agro-forestry crop, plays a significant role in protecting the fragile ecosystem of the coastal belt. During the 1970’s it became apparent that the productivity of the crop was low and declining due to a number of production constraints. These included: presence of serious pests and diseases, poor crop husbandry practices as a result of inadequate extension services to growers, lack of improved planting materials, presence of sub-optimal climatic conditions as well as lack of institutional set-up to promote/support coconut research and development (R&D) activities. Cognizant of the economic importance of the crop the Government of Tanzania initiated the National Coconut Development Programme (NCDP) in 1979/80 with financial and technical assistance from the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and a loan from the International Development Association (IDA) with the objective to revive the coconut industry through various R&D activities.
