,Tanzania ,Africa Good Governance Program on the Radio Waves

Following the successful broadcast of the Malawi Digital Satellite Radio Pilot Program held from May 28 to July 16, 2003, the experience of the participants and their evaluation of the pilot initiative, the World Bank Institute, in collaboration with the Municipal Development Partnership for Eastern and Southern Africa and local partners, have taken a step further to develop a series of Digital Satellite Radio Training Programs for Local Government in Africa. For the first time, an audio format of learning series for capacity building on anticorruption at the municipal level. Programs on civic participation and public finance for practitioners will follow.

The objective of the anticorruption program is to support a process of institutional change at the local government level by facilitating the design of tools for combating corruption. The training program provides a platform for municipal officials and citizens to learn specific anti-corruption strategies, which can be adapted and applied to their municipalities' context.

This Africa Good Governance Program on the Radio Waves – Governing Municipalities without Corruption has been designed with all of Africa in mind but particular attention has been paid to our partners in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda. Municipal National associations from each of these countries as well as key stakeholders from central government and non governmental institutions have been involved directly in its design and content. We share high expectations with our partners on the possibility of delivering a program via radio. It is clear that capacity building needs to be as decentralized as our clients are and radio is one of the ways to reach our stakeholders. We invite all local governments and members of the civil society to actively participate in this learning program to combat corruption, which has a wide range of corrosive effects on our societies. The program is in both English and Swahili, thereby increasing the outreach to key stakeholder groups in the region.
