Mobile phones and other digital technologies have emerged tops among factors playing a decisive role in promoting entrepreneurship in the country and creating job openings in the national economy.

The role of information and communication technology (ICT) in the national endeavour for free enterprise is recognised in the year’s prosperity index rankings where Tanzania has made progress on only two categories.

It has performed dismally in six of the indicators used by The Legatum Institute to rank countries on the basis of their prosperity with the Economy and Social Capital variables being the main underperformers.

Ability to promote and create private enterprise is one of the eight indicators that the London-based think tank uses in surveys to measure a country’s prosperity. |

Boosted by the skyrocketing use of mobile phones, Tanzania’s teledensity is expected to reach 100 per cent in less than five years with the Universal Communications Services Access Fund (UCSAF) playing a pivotal role.

The teledensity surged from 10 per cent in 2005 to 71 per cent last year mostly driven by the exponential growth in mobile phone penetration. Mobile phone users reached 34.1 million mid this and subscriptions are estimated to grow at more than 20 per cent annually.

UCSAF Acting Chief Executive Officer Albert Richard said currently about 89 per cent of the country had access to communication services with the remaining 11 per cent to be covered by 2020.
