76. Price collusion chasing sesame farmers out of production - ESRF

  Some district executives who sit in crop prices determination meetings between them and the purchasing companies have shares in the latter firms, an act which has greatly affected the welfare of the farmers. The conflict of interests has been cited as a stumbling bloc to the realisation of the set development goals to halve poverty by 2010 because the executives allegedly collude with the buyers to purchase the crop at through-away prices.
 
77. $13 Million Agro-Scheme Targets Three Countries

  A network of more than 3,200 rural agro-dealers will be established in Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi to help small-scale farmers rid themselves of poverty and hunger. In Tanzania, it will be implemented under the Tanzania Agro-dealer Strengthening Programme (TASP) to reduce the time and distance farmers travel to fetch farm inputs.
 
78. Mushroom Cultivation in Tanzania

  Mushroom cultivation was first introduced to Tanzania in 1993 by the Ministry of Agriculture
and Cooperatives under the sponsorship of the International Fund for Agricultural
Development. The focus was on cultivation of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) and the
first strains to be cultivated were obtained from Belgium. This report presents findings of a survey on status of the industry that was carried
out in 5 regions of Tanzania famous for growing mushrooms between October 2006 and March 2007. The report also presents findings of a case study of a typical mushroom farmer.

  To help children who are made ever more vulnerable by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and UN World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a new manual on how to establish farm schools to teach orphans crucial
skills. The new manual advises on how to create a Junior Farmer Field and Life School to educate children on how to create sustainable livelihoods and long-term food security.

The purpose and scope of this research was to investigate, compile and analyze concrete evidence regarding the nature of changes in the governance of fresh fruits and vegetables value chain and their causes; and to identify the opportunities and challenges stemming from these changes and what determine success and failure in the new future governance and architecture.
 
82. TZ to benefit from GEF-assisted fisheries project

  Tanzania is among seven countries in the southwest Indian Ocean region that could reduce poverty through sustainable development of marine resources under a new project financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the World Bank has said. A US $12m grant from the GEF will help these countries to manage their fisheries resources for maximum economic returns, the Bank said following approval of the project by its Board of Executive Directors.

  The newly acquired possibility to own or access a mobile phone has brought radical changes to the way Tanzanian fishermen communicate, receive information and support decision making. Gaining access to information that is reliable and up-to-date, may it be through mobile phones or other means, is highly important in relation to livelihood issues. This is true for Tanzanian fishermen and most likely also for other people in the developed and the developing world, since we all share the same need to communicate.
 
87. Government to employ 2500 agricultural officers

  The government will employ a total of 2500 agricultural officers and dispatch them all over the country to advise farmers on how best to carry on agricultural activities. Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives, Dr David Mathayo said that 3000 students would be enrolled in agricultural institutes every year to enable the country have enough agricultural officers.

The conference is to take place in Rome, Italy, from 25th - 27th September 2007.
