About 85 percent of the country's population-mostly poor-lives in rural areas, with 20 percent living in extreme poverty. Smallholder farmers are potentially the largest drivers of economic growth in Tanzania because they account for over 50 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product. However, because they depend exclusively on rain-fed agriculture, their production is usually affected by bad weather, inadequate road infrastructure, etc. |

Some district executives who sit in crop prices determination meetings between them and the purchasing companies have shares in the latter firms, an act which has greatly affected the welfare of the farmers. The conflict of interests has been cited as a stumbling bloc to the realisation of the set development goals to halve poverty by 2010 because the executives allegedly collude with the buyers to purchase the crop at through-away prices. |

A network of more than 3,200 rural agro-dealers will be established in Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi to help small-scale farmers rid themselves of poverty and hunger. In Tanzania, it will be implemented under the Tanzania Agro-dealer Strengthening Programme (TASP) to reduce the time and distance farmers travel to fetch farm inputs. |

Mushroom cultivation was first introduced to Tanzania in 1993 by the Ministry of Agriculture
and Cooperatives under the sponsorship of the International Fund for Agricultural
Development. The focus was on cultivation of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) and the
first strains to be cultivated were obtained from Belgium. This report presents findings of a survey on status of the industry that was carried
out in 5 regions of Tanzania famous for growing mushrooms between October 2006 and March 2007. The report also presents findings of a case study of a typical mushroom farmer. |

To help children who are made ever more vulnerable by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and UN World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a new manual on how to establish farm schools to teach orphans crucial
skills. The new manual advises on how to create a Junior Farmer Field and Life School to educate children on how to create sustainable livelihoods and long-term food security. |

Horticultural trade, especially exports of fresh fruits and vegetables from Sub-Saharan African countries to the European market, has received a great deal of attention over the past decade. The purpose and scope of this research was to investigate, compile and analyze concrete evidence regarding the nature of changes in the governance of fresh fruits and vegetables value chain and their causes; and to identify the opportunities and challenges stemming from these changes and what determine success and failure in the new future governance and architecture. |

Tanzania is among seven countries in the southwest Indian Ocean region that could reduce poverty through sustainable development of marine resources under a new project financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the World Bank has said. A US $12m grant from the GEF will help these countries to manage their fisheries resources for maximum economic returns, the Bank said following approval of the project by its Board of Executive Directors.
