  Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic in Africa has received considerable attention by epidemiologists and demographers, as well as health economists concerned with the sectoral impact of the disease. Given the alarming prevalence of this deadly disease in Africa ‘modelling’ the macroeconomic impact of AIDS becomes imperative.

Opportunities for dialogue between youth and their peers will be expanded, with an emphasis on youth-adult partnerships and how to strengthen them, in addition to supporting and developing mentorship opportunities.

  Since the late 1980's, the presence of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and its effects on
adults in their prime years and their dependants has become more visible. The lion’s share of donor funding in response to the epidemic has traditionally been channelled towards interventions on preventive and curative health and behaviour change, and less attention
has been paid to the social and economic impacts of the epidemic. Recently though, AIDS-affected communities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have been at the forefront of responding to the impacts of the epidemic, with many innovative local projects to tackle the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on families and
communities.
 
154. Linkages between HIV/AIDS and the livestock sector in East and Southern Africa

  This is a report/ output of a technical workshop which was conducted in 2005 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. AIDS has until recently been viewed as a global health crisis having a devastating impact worldwide. Agriculture on the other hand is the largest sector in most sub Saharan economies and many of the countries affected by HIV/AIDS rely heavily on agriculture for food production and exports. One of the workshop objectives was to develop a comprehensive partnership to tackle issues and promote livestock as a realistic and practical response to reducing vulnerability created by AIDS.

It will take place in December, from 18th - 21st, 2006 at the AICC in Arusha. The 3rd MAC will serve as a forum to review progress in HIV/AIDS trends in prevention, control, research, best practices and experiences made in the past 4 years.
