4. Tanapa eyes robust intelligence unit to combat poaching
Monday, February 15, 2016  by Admin
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) has been urged to invest in a robust countrywide park intelligence unit in order to curb poaching.

Tanapa spokesperson Pascal Shelutete told The Guardian on Sunday that strengthening the intelligence unit was essential as it will help parks to know beforehand about criminals intending to poach elephants and other endangered species.

He said poachers had advanced their skills and tactics, so it was paramount for Tanapa to be more proactive rather than reactive.

According to him, despite his agency’s transforming its intelligence unit into a paramilitary one, it was still important to dispatch more qualified and well equipped park wardens to thwart poaching.

“Such an initiative will increase accountability in the agency and go a long way to bolstering the anti-poaching crusade as poachers can sometimes be heavily armed with sophisticated military weaponry,” he added.
