665. EAC Power Masterplan Ready for Approval

The ambitious East African Power Masterplan study is ready and will soon be implemented. It has been endorsed by the East African permanent secretaries and will be tabled before the East African Community Council of Ministers next month. The project's roadmap suggests a fast-track implementation of the Arusha-Nairobi-Jinja 220 KV transmission lines.

  The Tanzania Association of Non Government Organizations (TANGO) in collaboration with Action Aid Tanzania will stage a mass rally next week aimed at asserting more pressure on the Tanzanian government and G8 countries to adhere to their commitment to the Millennium Declaration. The message will be focused by fostering a fairer globalization process appealing to the rich countries to honor their commitment of stepping up their humanitarian assistance and development aid to the poor countries to 0.7 per cent of their GDP.

The government of Tanzania has pledged to increase its investment in research and development to one per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2015.

The Tanzanian president, Benjamin Mkapa, made the announcement on 24 June at the official opening of the Tanzania Academy of Science, in Dodoma.
