680. Prize for Rural Communication

  The International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) – UNESCO grants prizes every two years for rural communication. It is intended to recognize a meritorious and innovative activity in improving communication in rural communities, mainly in the developing countries. Nominations have to be in by 1st October 2005, and the awards ceremony will be held in Paris, form 21 to 23 March 2006.
 
681. Decentralisation improves service delivery- envoy

  Development partners have said decentralisation process in the country is a positive move towards enabling local government authorities to play their role according to the will of the people.

Speaking on behalf of the development partners at the Local Government Support Project (LGSP) in Dar es Salaam, the Embassy of Ireland Charge d’Affair, John McCullagh, said increasing availability of development funds at local level has reduced the need for area-based funding outside the national budget.

The World Bank has approved 60 billion for a three- and a half year project to boost education, health, water and roads among other areas.
 
682. Donors to pump 616bn/- in next budget

  A group of 14 donors has pledged to support the next national budget to the tune of 616.165bn/-, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Ramadhani Khijja announced.

He said the money would come from the European Union (EU), the UK, The Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Others are Ireland, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

  The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently launched a database that can be crucial to national development. The Tanzania Social Economic Database (TSED) is a database is an “organized networked store of data upon which researchers, planners and other decision makers can draw and utilize in the day-to-day tasks”.“The immediate objective of the venture was to bring forth a creature that would itself be readily accessible and accurate bank of useful information as far as it was humanly possible”.

  The National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP) is the 2nd national organizing framework for putting the focus on poverty reduction high on the country’s development agenda. It keeps in focus the aspirations of Tanzania’s Development Vision (Vision 2025) for high and shared growth, good governance, and it is committed to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) agreed targets for reducing poverty, hunger, illiteracy and discrimination against women by 2015. It builds on the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) (2000/01-02/03), the one-year PRS Review and the Medium Term Plan for Growth and Poverty Reduction and the Tanzania Mini-Tiger Plan 2020 which emphasizes the growth momentum to fast-track the Vision 2025 targets.

  The Akiba Commercial Bank was started with the vision of reaching and providing financial services to the lower side of the market. Today’s 70 % of Akiba’s services are micro finances. Mrs. Specioza Mashauri, the Deputy Marketing Manager says women take the lions share. Akiba commercial bank tailor-made micro finance services are mostly linked to women and the poor and as such, the bank has gone an extra mile in serving women and their micro small enterprises.

  The Millennium Development Goals are aimed at alleviating abject poverty and increasing access to social services to a majority of people in developing countries. The pre-requisite of attaining MDGs is an increase in Official Development Assistance to the least developed countries like Tanzania. The Tanzania Private sector has a role to help Tanzania these goals by attracting investment in labour intensive industries.
 
689. Food aid NGO supports modern banana farm project

  The Tanzania-Japan Food Aid Counterpart Fund has offered a car and other equipment amounting to 26m/- to support banana farming in Kilombero district in Morogoro region.

The support was extended in Dar es Salaam mid last week through the Rufiji Basin Development Authority (RUBADA) board chairman Mbogo Futakamba.
